Focus Nations: Sudan

Prayer Needs: Please pray that peace comes to Sudan, that atrocities by Sudanese against Sudanese come to an end. Pray that atrocities against women end. Pray for the end of slavery in Sudan. Pray for reconciliation and the end of the genocide. Please pray for workers from the western church to go to Sudan and help rebuild and to be the Light of God.

Geography: The largest country in Africa, Sudan has ecosystems ranging form desert in the north to grasslands and mountains in the center to tropical bush in the south.

Ethnicity: The population of Sudan is about 45 % Arab with the 55 % of the majority being people of different tribes.

There are a total of 244 different ethnic groups in Sudan.

History: Sudan has seen one of the longest and bloodiest civil wars in human history with more than twenty years of violence and several million killed. Currently in the Dafur region there is a long, slow, systematic genocide that has been going on for over two years.

Government: Sudan is an Islamic Republic with Islamic Shari’a law being applied to Muslims but not to non-Muslims as a provision under the current constitution. Shari’a law has been a point of contention in Sudan, and one of the factors in the ongoing violence.

Church: 65% of the population of Sudan is Muslim, with the majority living in the North. 23% of the population is Christian with the majority living in the south.

The Need: Ravaged by war, hatred and famine, Sudan is a nation desperately in need of infrastructure, medical care, hospitals, food and the means to irrigate crops. There is also a need for education as only 33% of the population is functionally literate. Of the 132 languages in Sudan, only 7 have complete Bibles.
